These are three cards I caught at a reading by Harmony Korine in 1998. He was reading from his then-new book A Crackup at the Race Riots at Barnes & Noble on Astor Place in New York, in the East Village, and the occasion began with Korine, not long after the silver-screen release of Gummo, sitting still in a strange robe and a straw hat while a boombox on a table played the Cranberries’ song “Salvation.” After that he read a salvation-themed poem and, at one point, stood up on the table (as I remember it) and threw out a large stack of cards such as these into the confused crowd. I caught three of them; there were many more. I interviewed him a little while after and he said he was petrified that day, from the moment he woke up until the moment it was over, that he was going to be assassinated in the bookstore.
